Sometimes you discover a movie that is so low budget, you almost give it a pass for being awful. For the first time in years, I actually viewed a B movie before watching the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode making fun of it, and that movie is The Giant Spider Invasion, which was on Shudder. Even Shudder’s description said to check out said episode, which I know of mostly via a funny clip where the show’s trio make Packers jokes, a video I posted after Green Bay won the Super Bowl. After all this film is set in Wisconsin, and well there is actually a giant killer spider that murders its victims and only really pops up later in the movie. The creature effects are hilarious and yet this movie was clearly a homage to 1950s monster flicks, which lead me to at least give it a chance.
Sorry folks, this movie is bad, yet not in a “Utter trash, I hate it” type of way. No its almost so bad its good, and you can tell there were good intentions. However by the end of the movie I was bored senseless, and I don’t have to tell folks to check out the highly underrated Eight Legged Freaks instead, which would not exist if movies like The Giant Spider Invasion had never been made. So hurrah for Bill Rebane, I guess? Or not. Honestly I watched this movie sober and I can barely recall how it even concluded, so I guess its time to watch it again with funny commentary and laugh at cheesy FX and poor acting.
