Horrorfest 2016 Presents: The Traveler (2010, Michael Oblowitz)

Despite being a fan of one Val Kilmer, this is clearly one of his worst films and probably the first movie I’ve seen from him where I actually wanted him to be silent. This movie is the type that the MSTK crew would mock if it had been made years ago, and I realize that serial killer movies don’t work if they fail to meet two important criteria. One is that they be entertaining if they fall into a more campy style, and the other is that if they are meant to be scary, well they need to be terrifying or creepy. The Travler has some initial promise and throws all that away midway through the film. The hardest movies to get through are not the truly awful ones or even the mediocre films, but rather a movie like this, where any good elements are buried. Even the flashback scenes manage to be shot in a manner that wouldn’t even pass muster for a cheesy monster film or a low budget slasher. Whatever this film cost, it was too high and the money was squandered.

Skip this movie and watch Twixt instead, which is also on Netflix. Oh by the way there is a twist, and its stupid and I hated it. Even the kills are blah, half measure efforts that fail to be really shocking or interesting. The last act takes the movie into even sillier territory, and I can’t believe I finished the movie without the aid of beer. I don’t even recall any of the other actors because they failed to make an impression upon me, and I don’t really care to look them up, either. I can abide bad comedies since some of them still make me laugh, yet a bad horror film is the equivalent of a poor meal. Throw this movie in the trash.

Where’s The Wi-Fi?

Unfortunately for us all the modern world has dictated that we all need to be connected to the Internet at one point or another. Many, if not most, jobs have online applications instead of paper ones these days, or at least encourage people to apply via a computer instead of filling out paper apps with poor hand writing. Social media, fantasy sports, the need to know more and be kept up to date about current events, all require Internet. So having wi-fi is important, since it enables us to not have to use expensive mobile data to post something we find pithy on Twitter, or upload pictures to Instagram. Young people are more likely to abuse mobile data due to Snapchat and listening to music on YouTube, so wi-fi is critical to have. Yet it seems that many places do not have wi-fi, or they require you to obtain a password just to log into their often crappy guest wi-fi. The struggle is real, that is if you are focused on first world problems. I’m sure there are people without drinking water or food, and yet here I am complaining about not having Internet. Our priorities are out of wack.

Still being able to sit on my phone when faced with boring people at a bar where I cannot get drunk at because I’m the designated driver is useful. I’m sorry but I’m often anti-social due to either annoying people or people who have less interesting things to say than I do on a regular basis. Also I have no shame in asking for the wi-fi password wherever I go, and then give it to those who think that they are bad people for requesting something that they need. The people who have unlimited data are lucky people, but for the rest of us we need that wi-fi, and we need it yesterday or an hour ago. Oh and we do sometimes use the Internet for good things, such as finding out the name of a song or checking our banking to make sure we can afford the pricey beverages and food at that overrated bar and grill friends dragged us to because they make more than we do. Things could be worse, I suppose…

Broads In Atlanta

Desiigner’s “Panda” is this bizarre rap track that has lyrics I barely understand (or get at all) and is punctuated by weird noises. It’s all really catchy and entertaining, plus the video is a strange nighttime odyssey through what is probably Atlanta. It could be any city, I guess. Panda. Panda panda.

Horrorfest 2015 Presents: Society (1989, Brian Yuzna)

Ever felt as if you didn’t belong, even though you had it all? Bill is rich and is at the top of the world, yet he he has these sweat causing nightmares that convince him nothing is okay. Something is wrong. Very wrong. Unfortunately for young Bill he is about to discover just how correct he is about his fears. What lurks beneath the shinny happy life that Bill is a part of in the upper class suburbs. The truth is far more disturbing that he could ever realize.

Brian Yuzna was responsible for some of the Re-Animator films and he jumped at the chance to create a unique film. Despite Society being a soap opera it is still an eerie movie that works fairly well. Billy Warlock is great as Bill, playing the character straight and conveying his youthful terror and suspicions quite well. Also Yuzna can’t help but include body horror and a scene that is one of the most disgusting of all time. I won’t even try to figure out who the villians of the movie are. Worm people? Beings from another world?

Well at the very least I would prefer lizard people over them. That’s for sure. For our sakes I hope it’s all fiction. Also you can’t hate on a horror movie with special effects done by Screaming Mad  George. Too bad that there wasn’t a franchise made out this film since Yuzna had some interesting, if obvious, ideas. He also is not afraid to go to dark and gross places, which is a plus.

Favorite Songs: Pale Shelter

Pale Shelter by Tears for Fears is an excellent and new favorite song of mine. The video is also marvelous, further showcasing the great and fast guitar cords and Curt Smith’s melancholy vocals. Roland Orzabal backs him up too and the duo although having other band members were the heart and soul of the group. I recently acquired The Hurting from Half-Priced Books and it is awesome, so this video was posted with that in mind. “You dont give me love you give me pale shelter.”

Follow The Candle Lights

College’s Fantasy Park is a glorious synthesizer driven masterpiece that is one of my all time favorite songs. “Come on come on, follow the candle lights.” I should really get my hands on the album it’s featured on one of these days. They’re a great part of the awesome 80s style movement that is driving a lot of techno and dance music these days, which is fine because the 80s had plenty of great dance music to begin with.
