Horrorfest 2022 Presents: Werewolf by Night (2022, Michael Giacchino)

Finally the MCU and Disney went full horror movie, although this one isn’t very scary. No it’s just tons of fun, has some great action scenes and nice humor that works. Werewolf by Night also has a good cast, too, and despite being a tad short the length works here. This is supposed to be a homage to classic Universal Studios horror movies, too, although it is clearly based on Marvel Comics as well.

Gael García Bernal is great in this as the hero, Laura Donnelly is also fantastic, and Harriet Sansom Harris is wonderfully evil. There is a surprise appearance by one Marvel character, and a fight scene that might be one of the best in the whole MCU and which I want to watch again, sooner rather than later.

I would love it if more horror was done in the MCU, and I’m hoping the future Blade project comes to fruition. Whether or not the characters in this one are revisited is for now unlikely, although that remains to be seen. Check this one out if you can, too bad since it’s on Disney+ we are probably unlikely to get this one on physical media. Such is the downside to online viewing these days.

Horrorfest 2022 Presents: The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! (1972, Andy Milligan)

Andy Milligan had an interesting low budget career where he made whatever movies he could, right up until he sadly passed away. I’ve seen one already and just like this one it’s a mix of low budget oddities and a still wonderfully goofy take on horror cinema. I don’t mind either one, yet I can’t fully endorse the two. The title for his 1972 cult movie is a mouthful, that’s for sure, and concerns a werewolf clan hiding out at an old mansion.

The clan’s patriarch is dying, and the family is desperate to find a cure for their lycanthrope curse, which has plagued them for their whole lives. Some parts work, others don’t, and the movie plays out mostly in a soap opera vein. The full moon also shows up to wreck havoc in the finale, and I did greatly enjoy the ending, which has some nice surprises. Check this out anyways despite it being uneven, and I’ll always eagerly watch cult cinema no matter what.

Dead People Aren’t Much Fun: Horrorfest 2022

I’ve run out of title ideas. That or I’m just tired these days. Yet I press on to another Horrorfest even though at some point I’ve got to be getting too old for this sort of thing. Anyways on with the show!

Horrorfest 2021 Presents: Blood (1973, Andy Milligan)

Blood is a really weird low budget 1970s horror flick that I’m not sure I liked or not. There are certain aspects that worked, and I didn’t hate the movie. Yet Andy Milligan veers between a vampire movie, a werewolf movie and even a killer plant movie. I think he would have benefited from cutting out some plot aspects.

I did laugh at the ending, which I think I was supposed to as I believe it was a nice joke. Some of the movie is really slow and most of the interesting moments only happen in the final act. I suppose you could do worse horror movie wise, and you could also do better. Blood has it’s goofy charms, I suppose.

Horrorfest 2020 Presents: Moon of the Wolf (1972, Daniel Petrie)

Look I know this was a TV movie yet Moon of the Wolf still comes across as a mess. The main problem is not enough werewolf moments for a movie with that literal of a title. I did not hate it however since the mystery elements are a tad interesting, and I did like that the movie tries to be a serious werewolf movie. However the low budget is a clear limitation that the film does not overcome.

The actual werewolf parts were neat, though, and the last act makes a sizable effort to be scary and suspenseful. I wonder if maybe a restoration of the original negatives would help, and I think this is one of those films that would benefit from a modern remake. Stop groaning already, you know I’m right.

Horrorfest 2018 Presents: Bad Moon (1996, Eric Red)

Despite having the look and feel of a TV movie Bad Moon is a decent werewolf movie with some good special effects. The cast helps: Mariel Hemingway, Michael Paré and Mason Gamble elevate some paper thin material. The film is mostly simple, yet its a dog that is the best thing about Bad Moon. Thor is a huge, protective German Shepherd that seems to be the only one who knows what is going on. I guess its hard to realize someone you love is a werewolf.

I did like the discussion on if werewolves need a full moon to change, and the wolf attacks are brutal. The last act has plenty of suspense and Bad Moon has its moments. Still I can see why some did not like this film, and I wonder if a werewolf movie with a large budget will happen any time soon.

Horrorfest 2018 Makes Me Shudder: 10 Years of Viewing

Look, I know the last one was a bust. I blame work, laziness, whatever. However this time I have a new, better resource: Shudder. Also not going with a list again, just showing the ones I have seen so far. Plus this is the 10th year of me doing Horrorfest. Wow. So I plan on going all out this time.

Horrorfest 2016 Presents: Murder Party (2007, Jeremy Saulnier)

Most of this film is build up to a wild final act, and yet the movie is constructed in a way that it makes sense. Poor Christopher unfortunately shows up at a party full of costume men and women that have decided to kill him. For art, of course, since that’s what’s hip nowadays. Before Jeremy Saulnier gave us Blue Ruin and Green Room him and his buddies crafted this weird slasher movie full of awful people and strange happenings.

Despite being really low budget this movie has good pacing and is entertaining. The murder artists have radical costumes-the ones inspired by The Warriors and Blade Runner were my favorites. Also being in line with Saulnier’s other films this one has gore and violence to spare. I loved Blue Ruin and I enjoyed this film so up next is Green Room, which I’ve heard good things about.

Horrorfest 2015: The Final Chapter

There’s no theme this year. Also this might be the last one. Maybe. List which is always subject to change endlessly and whenever I feel like it. Especially when Netflix decides to pull horror films before October like they often do. Bad Netflix:
