College Football is upon us, which means it is time for another edition of ESPN College Football Pick ‘Ems, which I do every year. I failed to post about them last season, so here is another go at seeing how poorly well I do this season. Also these are straight, and not confidence or spread, as I got tired of doing those. I just like choosing who wins.
Week 1:
*Boise State Broncos over Florida State Seminoles
Yes I know FSU is at home, but look at how poorly FSU played compared to BSU last season. The Broncos had a winning record, where as FSU did not, and struggled down the stretch. I think the Broncos have some trouble with a pumped up Seminoles team and then pull away in the end.
*Ole Miss Rebels over Memphis Tigers
The Tigers went bowling last season, while Ole Miss did not. Normally I would go with the home team here, but I think the Rebels have the talent to pull off an upset. Also the SEC is way tougher than the American Conference. Rebels by a field goal.
*Nebraska Cornhuskers over South Alabama Jaguars
Here we come to the cupcake part of the picks, as Nebraska also gets the poor Jaguars at home to start the season. If Nebraska is for real or at least good enough to be ranked, this should be an ugly blowout over by halftime.
*Washington Huskies over Eastern Washington Eagles
Ah look, another easy match up for the home team. Washington by two or three TDs. No need to waste more space on this one.
*North Carolina Tar Heels over South Carolina Gamecocks
A fairly even match up, however I choose to take the home team instead even though ESPN favors the Gamecocks. Call it a gut feeling but I think the Tar Heels can win, and I refuse to call it an upset when they are not playing on a hostile field.
*Virginia Tech Hokies over Boston College Eagles
V-Tech usually starts the season off well, although they did lose to the Eagles last season. I think they are capable of earning a revenge win, although they are on the road and Boston College has played much better dating to last season than they normally do.
*Stanford Cardinal over Northwestern Wildcats
The Cats are on the road and have to travel west, and that usually does not work out for East Coast teams. Also Stanford is usually one of the best in the nation, and therefore I don’t see Northwestern pulling off what would be a good upset to begin the year.
*Auburn Tigers over Oregon Ducks
Ah finally a game with two ranked opponents. This should be a nice close one, although I have to go with the Tigers since the game is on a neutral site in Texas, much closer to Auburn territory. I wish I could watch this game, and I think Auburn barely wins by a touchdown or less.
*Georgia Bulldogs over Vanderbilt Commodores
Even though it is on the road, Georgia has way too much talent for Vandy to overcome at home. Despite their bowl loss to Texas the Bulldogs are ranked in the Top 5 unsurprisingly for another season, and hope to build off of last year and make the playoff.
*USC Trojans over Fresno State Bulldogs
Ah a good early season match up between two non ranked teams, although since it is at home for the Trojans Fresno State is unlikely to win. Still this could be closer than people think, particularly since the Trojans lost people to the NFL and the Bulldogs would love to pull the upset.
Tune in for next week’s picks, or to mock me when all of these are horribly wrong. College football is back, finally!
