Horrorfest 2017 Presents: Legion-The Exorcist III Director’s Cut (1990, William Peter Blatty)

Years later on Shudder I watched the regular cut of The Exorcist III after having seeing the Director’s Cut thanks to my local public library. I prefer the DC although the theatrical cut is also fine, even though I feel that Legion is far more scarier and has a more effective and creepier ending. Both center on evil refusing to die, the past coming back to haunt people, and of course that epic nightmare fuel jump scare scene involving someone wielding a large pair of sheers. George C. Scott anchors this film as a policeman searching for answers that lead him back to a dead serial killer known as The Gemini Killer.

The opening for Legion is different and features an odd, wind filled sequence in a church that inspires dread. Legion is about how evil never really dies and how the devil has endless ways of maintaining evil , only in this case it is through a long dead killer showing back up again. Brad Dourif has always been good at playing evil and crazy people, yet I think he is at his most terrifying here as Gemini, the instrument of the film’s awful events. I can’t think of a movie that’s made me wary of garden sheers than this one, or at least one that’s been made recently. Ed Flanders and Scott Wilson also do a great job as part of the supporting cast as well. Wilson and Flanders both were also in the equally great The Ninth Configuration, which Blatty also directed.

Although this isn’t as good as The Exorcist, The Exorcist III is a worthy sequel and is one of the best horror films of the 1990s. It has also held up pretty well, particularly in it’s discussions of faith, belief, and fighting against the forces of darkness. The battle is a dirty daily job, but according to Scott’s policeman someone has to do it on a daily basis and the war never ends.

Horrorfest 2017 Presents: Final Destination 2 (2003, David R. Ellis)

Everyone went nuts over Final Destination, yet I was not one of those people. I thought it was a decent flick with some good kills that did have a nifty premise. I actually prefer Final Destination 2, which I think works better as a movie while still having wicked death scenes and also better characters. The first one did have the better cast, as the second installment is anchored by the return of Ali Larter and has A.J. Cook as the person this time who sees the horrible demises of everyone. Besides I find the car crash scene in the second flick to be way more horrifying and memorable, as people keep on referencing it to this day anytime they drive on the interstate. These movies are just slasher films with Death as the killer, and you don’t really watch them for the thin plots anyways-you view them to see awful things happen to nice people. Which is ghoulish and may describe most horror movies anyways. Maybe there’s something wrong with us horror fans? Nah….um…no…possibly…wink wink.

Sure there is a gruesome crushing death in this movie that’s probably the best part of the film, however I found the elevator death scene to be tragic and haunting the most. That poor lady died hoping someone would save her. Other death scenes are way more inventive and resulted in the people dying in ways that lead to cruel jokes about how one little thing can cause a massive chain reaction that ends with a horrifyingly memorable demise. I mean there is a car accident later in the movie that results in the deaths of several folks in a moment that can best described as awfully darkly comedic. Death sure has a lot of time on their hands if these movies are to be believed. Oh and I’m totally viewing the rest of the series. I’m also amused that Tony Todd is literally the mascot of these films, which is pretty cool.

Horrorfest 2017 Presents: Flesh For Frankenstein (1973, Paul Morrissey)

Udo Kier also played Frankenstein in Paul Morrissey’s other campy cult horror flick, Flesh For Frankenstein. I think I like this one a bit more than his Dracula one, and it has plenty of nasty and bloody moments. Joe Dallesandro also pops up in this one, and the movie even has a weird yet fitting commentary on eugenics that never made its way into any of the Hammer Studios Frankenstein movies for whatever reason.

The last act is insanely gruesome and pretty shocking even for a Frankenstein movie. Kier hams it up in this one, too, yet I liked his performance better in this flick than in Dracula. This one also has tons of sex to go along with the mayhem, which seemed to be a major aspect of 1970s Euro horror flicks. I think this is a fairly decent addition to the rest of the Frankenstein movies that Hollywood has been making since the dawn of cinema.

Horrorfest 2017 Presents: Blood For Dracula (1974, Paul Morrissey)

Udo Kier hams it up as Dracula in Paul Morrissey’s outlandish and very gory camp filled cult flick Blood For Dracula, which is definitely a unique take on the old legend. This wasn’t a particularly good movie yet I still oddly liked it anyways and I enjoyed the movie’s wilder aspects. I mean how can one not laugh at Dracula puking up blood simply because he can’t get virgin blood. That part is both grotesque, campy and fits the movie all too well.

Plus Morrissey even throws in a neat commentary about Dracula being the aristocracy verus the Marxist manservant Mario (Joe Dallesandro). The final act is utterly frantic and properly gory for a vampire movie. Parts of this movie felt like a softcore porno flick, the rest is Euro style horror trash that is passable enough entertainment. Definitely not like the other vampire movies from this era, that’s for sure.
