Horrorfest 2022 Presents: AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004, Paul W. S. Anderson)

While I was viewing Alien vs Predator I realized that this definitely feels like the Jason Takes Manhattan of the series, in which case I end up defending the movie haha. I prefer JTM anyways and I thought this wasn’t worth more than a 7/10, however there are things to like about AVP and I wonder if maybe I wouldn’t end up liking it even more on a second viewing in the future. For now I’ll have to rely on this review, which is half assed like most of my writings these days.

A group of experts descend into a hidden temple in Antarctica that is located beneath the ice. There, they uncover ancient secrets that would greatly excite that History Channel Aliens Guy. Sanaa Lathan is the main character and arguably a type of “Final Woman/Girl,” along with Raoul Bova, Lance Henriksen (who was also in Aliens), Colin Salmon and Ewen Bremner, plus others who end up becoming the victims of the battle between Predators and Xenomorphs. I was hoping for a far more gorier movie than we ended up with, still you can’t get everything you wish for.

The pyramid endlessly shifting around was a really cool bit, and Lathan is really good as Lex. I learned that if you help kill a Xenomorph with a Predator you become their teammate of sorts, and that going to some hidden temple area is never a good idea, although I knew that one already from countless other movies. The tag line for this movie also still cracks me up: “Whoever wins, we lose!” Man that’s serious. Viewed thanks to Hulu which because they got the new Predator movie they had all the series available to watch, which is nice.

Horrorfest 2014 Presents: Event Horizon (1997, Paul W. S. Anderson)

Back in 2014 I watched Event Horizon on Halloween after getting off of work. I drank most of a 12 pack of PBR so I’ll admit I wasn’t fully sober during my viewing, yet I still recall how disturbing this movie truly is throughout. I mean even when it’s not being pure nightmere fuel most parts are so creepy and just dig under your brain and stay there. Outer space horror has been done well before, however I think Event Horizon is one of the modern ones to properly execute how space can be utterly terrifying.

The cast surely helps as Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill headline the unlucky group that ventures into the Event Horizon, a spaceship that went to places not even the Star Trek crew would dare explore. Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, Jason Isaacs and Sean Pertwee form up most of the also pretty talented secondary cast. Unfortunately there was a longer cut of this film that no longer exists which is too bad seeing as this cut would have been even more gruesome and would have given the film an even bleaker impact.

Despite some of the special effects being dated and the last scene having a silly jump scare Event Horizon remains one of the freakiest outer space horror movies. Say whatever about Paul W.S. Anderson, the man had a knack for making some pretty crazy and messed up horror films back in the 1990s and the 2000s. Oh and I’ll never forget eyeless Sam Neil or how bleak this movie ended up being in multiple parts. Many cite Alien as being a reason to never go into space yet I think Event Horizon is my answer to why one should remain on Earth.

Horrorfest 2014: Still Not Quite Dead

Since 2008 I have watched horror movies from August to early November ever year. Its a grand tradition, one that I will probably keep on doing until I’m finally tired of horror movies…..or more likely run out of the free time necessary to binge every year. There is no set schedule this time, and the theme is horror franchises. Buckle up folks: its going to be another fun ride.

Horrorfest 2013 Presents: Resident Evil (2002, Paul W.S. Anderson)

Despite how the rest of the series is the first film is rather solid and creepy. Anderson does a fine job of building up the film’s atmosphere and not revealing the monsters until later. There is a strong feeling of doom and menace surrounding a covert team sent into an underground lair to deal with a terrible situation. Only until its too late do they realize the serious danger they are wrapped up in.

This movie is also really entertaining although Anderson is a bit obsessed with slow motion. I did like the action scenes, as all of them are well executed and even a bit outrageous at times. The zombie dogs were cool and I laughed when Alice roundhouse kicked one in the face. Oh and there is a twist, flashbacks and your typical gigantic ugly creature. It would have looked better if less bad CGI would have been involved. But I did think the zombies were freaky looking.

The ending merely serves as setup for the rest of the series, and its clear that this is the origins film where Alice develops into unstoppable badass. I did like the train sequence and I imagine this movie is one of those films you can watch again on a bad weather day. I will check out the rest of the series even though looking them up I’m disappointed that Anderson didn’t direct them all. He has a campy feel and a distinctive visual style that fits these kinds of movies really well. Although I do wish George A. Romero would have directed this for obvious reasons.

After Midnight: Horrorfest 2013

Lon Chaney and some creepy woman are so happy that you stopped by for the introduction to this year’s Horrorfest. I’m carrying this over from my last blog, and I’ve been doing Horrorfests ever since 2008. From August until sometime in November I watch as many horror movies as I can, only this year I’m actually planning a theme for October-you’ll see. Just sit down, buckle up, and enjoy the ride. Don’t be alarmed if you scream or if sharp fangs press against your neck. Its all part of the show, see….
