Deception and Card Tricks: House of Games (1987)

David Mamet is one of those directors/screenwriters who knows how to craft an interesting story. Even if he gets a little twisty in his presentations, things usually work out. House of Games is a world of crooks, conmen, victims and thrill seekers. The audience is as much the mark as is anyone in the movie, which is why House of Games works so well. Even months after seeing Mamet’s cult classic I’m still thinking about how it unwinds, and the journey it so carefully takes the viewer on.

Lindsay Crouse is a psychiatrist named Margaret, who’s life changes forever when she meets Mike, played by the always excellent Joe Mantegna. How they meet draws you in immediately: you can sense it is all a con, yet Mamet refuses to play his hand and you are forced to guess along with Margaret. Crouse has the hard job of playing both mark and someone capable of looking at a situation and knowing she’s being played. Mantegna is ridiculously charming and offers her a way to engage her dark side.

I like how Mamet feels his audience is smart enough to understand what he is going for, and refuses to dumb anything down. He offers up this exciting and quite dangerous world that draws you in and makes you wonder how events will conclude. The film veers from drama to film noir and offers even suspense without missing a beat. Enjoying a movie that knows what it wants and offers satisfying multiple elements was probably refreshing in the 1980s and it is very much so even now.

Oh and this movie even revises and reexamines basic film noir tropes and cliches. I found the conclusion to be oddly surprising, although perhaps others do not. I wonder if had events transpired differently, could Mike and Margaret have taken a different path? Funny how just a little nudge towards a different line of destiny has such a marvelous impact. I’m reminded of that line from of all things the modern comedy Role Models: “You can’t bullshit a bullshitter.”

Neo-Western Before Neo-Westerns Were Cool: Johnny Guitar (1954, Nicholas Ray)

Every so often I finally get around to viewing a Nicholas Ray film and so far I have been well rewarded every time. Some are better than others, and in this case his 1954 cult western classic Johnny Guitar might be his best, or at least one of them. What aids this picture is that Ray takes cliches and works around them while also embracing many of them at the same time. He even manages to create some new ones, and works in a romantic subplot that is more of a square than a triangle. Even though one member of it refuses to admit that she hungers for a man she openly loathes.

Naturally Johnny Guitar has those picturesque views of the old west. Yet the costume design and additional use of color rounds out things very nicely. I could look at this movie all day, and whatever transfer Hulu featured looked great. Guitar, Vienna, Dancin’ Kid and his bunch are all dressed up in bright, vivid colors, while Emma, Vienna’s rival, and the townspeople she manipulates are dressed in either dull or black clothes. Even though they are supposed to represent law and order in contrast to Vienna and company, if you looked only at what people were wearing in this movie you would easily peg Emma as the villain. Which incidentally she is in this movie.

In fact the Vienna-Johnny-Dancin’-Emma love affair mess probably contributed the most trouble in this movie than anything else. I got the HUAC Committee parallels however I felt that the theme of suspicion without cause is one that fits in well in any era. Oh and the angry mob descending on Vienna’s home later in the film, stirred up by Emma, remains haunting and anger inducing to this day. Guilt assumed before innocence and by association is an all too common aspect of history that people tend to sweep under the rug. Best to just assert they “Deserved it” instead.

Having made film noirs before and after Ray could not help including those aspects in his western. It is really a marvel that this movie exists. There is no gun fight duel in the street, no stirring speeches or wrongs particularly righted. Yes some justice happens despite the circumstances, yet it comes too late to be truly satisfying. Unlike some of the films from it’s era and genre Johnny Guitar stands apart, confusing some of it’s intended audience while inspiring some like myself. Too bad Ray was so far ahead of his time, a decade or so early to a brand of western that is mostly what the genre is today.

Horrorfest 2015 Presents: What We Do In The Shadows (2015, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement)

Just when you think the found footage/fake documentary style horror film has run its course there comes along another film that proves the doubters wrong. What We Do In The Shadows is one such film, and it is a hilarious entry in the sub genre that has recently been overwhelmed by Parnamormal Activity and it’s endless sequels. Lately Twilight has caused a good response in terms of some great vampire moves, so that’s good, I guess.

Living in an old house, hidden from society are a bunch of old vampires. What I love about this movie is that the jokes are well executed and range from slapstick to witty, often all in the same moment. The cast is top notch and each member adds to the funny proceedings. One of my favorite jokes is the bat fight scene, which is as amusing as it sounds. Although the last act wears a bit thin you have to laugh at Vlad going on and on about “The Beast.” Not to mention smile at the idea of werewolves and vampires talking smack to one another. Based on this and Housebound New Zealand horror has a very bright future indeed.

Horrorfest 2014 Presents: Perfect Blue (1997, Satoshi Kon)

Deciding to go from being a successful pop singer to an up and coming actress, Mima thinks that she has made the right decision, although an insane stalker doesn’t seem to think so. In fact this person is not only watching and following her, but has also created an online diary where they pretend to be Mima. Still Mima goes ahead with her plans, even though this results in the stalker escalating and even killing people, all in a plan to drive Mima insane. There is a moment where the audience is almost tricked into thinking that Mima has gone crazy, and it’s executed beautifully in a horrific and violent way. This film’s animation is fluid and stunning, another prime example of how the Japanese have quite possibly surpassed the Americans, although both have their own unique styles and contribute greatly to animation and cinema.

Another thing I love about this film is how it proceeds two other great films about talented people going crazy in Black Swan and Mullholland Drive, although Mullholland is more complex and better than either Swan or Perfect. Regardless this film builds up Mima’s descent into madness very slowly, coming to a fever pitch and at times leaving the viewer unsure of her state of mind. The last act is a walking nightmare, and what occurs is both creepy and stunning.

Plus this whole business starts when Mima chooses to be a part of a moment on the TV show she’s on that leaves her disturbed and haunted, as the film showcases in close ups that reveal that her mind is damaged by the experience, even though what she went through was pretend, not real. However it also causes her stalker to drive to new heights of rage, and in a way some of this film also reminded me of Opera, too, another film where an actress is in grave danger from a homicidal admirer. Not to mention the nods to Hitchcock, as he previously featured films where the protagonist-be they male or female-thought they were going crazy.

The last act is particularly captivating, as reality and fantasy blend together in a way that is rather unhealthy. I rather liked how the film ended, and this is one of the best horror films of the 90s. The score for this also is rather great, going from the fake pop music ballads of the group Mima leaves to creepier, more horror movie style scores that underline the film’s darker moments. Perfect Blue by the final shot is a memorable and excellent experience, a kaleidoscope of colors and moments in time. In a way it also is a social commentary on how people worship celebrities, obsessing over them in unhealthy ways and not realizing that they are not myths, but actual people, flesh and blood just like anyone else.

Favorite Film Series Presents: The Mad Max Series

The Mad Max series will be brought back to life this year or next year, depending on when the next entry in the series comes out. That is exciting news to me, yet it also resulted in the re-airing of the entire series on AMC. Sure they edited some material out, yet since I already watched the entire series before (the first two on Netflix, the last one on TV) that really doesn’t matter. The Mad Max movies follow the classic “Heroic” style trilogy, in which Max goes through multiple stages of characterization. The first film is purely an origins story, where as the second movie is Max becoming a hero, and the last film sees him embodying someone larger than life, passing on into legend and myth. None of this would be possible without the excellent performance of Mel Gibson, who was perfect for the role.

Mad Max (1979) is a strange mix of car driven action movie and horror film, ushering in a new style of apocalyptic type movie making. Its also a highly effective B-movie, a low budget film that ended up becoming a huge surprise hit. However this movie depicts the calm before the storm, or at least merely contained chaos, chaos that threatened to completely overwhelm what was left of organized society. Max and his fellow officers are the kid with his finger in the dyke, attempting to prevent anarchy from winning out. Anarchy though in the form of Toecutter and his motorcycle gang presents itself in extremely violent fashion.

George Miller, the series director and screenwriter (along with others throughout the films) smartly realizes that implied violence is far more disturbing and powerful than violence shown, although Mad Max features even onscreen violence to shock the viewer. A horrific and violent event is what changes Max, resulting in him embracing his dark side and using his brutal nature to achieve his own brand of punishment. Not justice, for the men he ends up hunting are not tried in court, but not revenge truly either because Max gives these men more of a chance than they deserve. Punishment is the right word for what he deals out, and its harrowing to witness.

Naturally a successful movie with a character such as Max usually results in a sequel, and therefore George Miller and Mel Gibson made Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. I actually think that the first film is slightly better while still also noting that The Road Warrior is a truly great sequel. There are not too many films that manage to not only be equal or better than the original, but also build upon what the original first started. Broken and left alone, Max wanders the wastelands of Australia. The opening credits state that the apocalypse has now covered the world since two sides went to war, resulting in an oil shortage that led to earth ruining violence on a massively epic scale. Here we go from any type of organized civilization to a world gripped in the jaws of insanity: wandering gangs murder and pillage, while the remaining “sane” people are forced to band together in desperate attempts to survive.

Road Warrior is more action packed, and also is faster paced than the first movie or even the third one. There is very little down time, and the action sequences are swift and hardcore. Staying remotely quiet for most of the movie, Max is a broken man forced by extreme circumstances to aid people he never thought he would help in the first place. The Shane effect takes place and through actions Max did not think he was capable of, he achieves his place as heroic adventurer. I like that this movie keeps the first one’s gritty style, and that the raw power of violence is still used to maximum effect. Interestingly enough according to sources detailing the making of this film this is the movie that George Miller wanted to make the first time around, but could not due to lack of money and other restraints. An increased budget was good for this movie, because the series deserved to have an even better look and style.

Finally there is Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which is the only one in the series that has the look and feel of an 80s movie. Sure the second one was made in 1981, but it lacks the 80s style and look, which is to its benefit. Despite being the weakest part of the trilogy I rather enjoy Thunderdome. Unlike the other ones, its a bit more fun, having some oddly lighthearted moments and even featuring some cheesy yet entertaining moments. Besides without this film, there would be no completing of the arc for Max’s character, where he becomes more than just a man.

Through a group of kids he encounters in the waste, Max witnesses the telling of a story about a Captain Walker, a larger than life person. Really though the story fits Max: he was once merely a person, yet he is the now the embodiment of hope for an entire group in desperate need of a leader. Naturally he reluctantly grows into the position, and by the film’s conclusion he has once again aided others. Really only the second and third movies have anything in common, since the first movie establishes Max and results in him being the character he ends up becoming in the other two films instead of having him help anyone. In a way, Max discovering and holding onto redemption is the most important theme that runs through this movie, and its satisfyingly embodied in the last act.

Now I wonder how the forth movie will fit into the rest of the series, especially since Mel Gibson is too old and too toxic to be used in the main role. Perhaps Miller will build more on the mythology aspect of Max, or have him realizing he no longer fits in a world that has moved on. We will see.
