Horrorfest 2020 Presents: Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966, Jun Fukuda)

That is a really long title for a Godzilla movie: Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. Ebirah happens to be a giant lobster that Godzilla ends up fighting later on in the movie. First though a group of people end up on an island controlled by a terrorist military group that even has airplanes and a nuclear reactor. Boy does this series really dial up the camp factor by this point, and people just went along with it. No matter because I really liked this movie: it’s fun, and wacky.

Plus fun for the whole family, really, as this entry is one that the kids could watch too. I liked how the heroes kept having to play hide and seek with the bad guys. They are forced to awaken Godzilla, who of course does underwater combat with Ebirah. Too bad Godzilla didn’t fight more underwater monsters in the series. Oh and Mothra pops up later on to help out, which makes sense considering she is the real hero of these movies.

Maybe one day I’ll finally tire of viewing Godzilla movies, and perhaps they’ll even stop making them. Yet I doubt either of that happens. Give me movies with huge monsters fighting each other while the humans run for cover. Sometimes cinema should be a blast, reveling in pomp and circumstances. If one can’t enjoy a movie with a killer lobster and a giant lizard sleeping off a bender, can one truly enjoy movies? Probably not.

It’s Hammer Time Presents: The Adominable Snowman (1957, Val Guest)

Despite staring Peter Cushing, The Abominable Snowman is one of Hammer Studios’ lesser films, one that would have benefited from the touch of a better director. While Val Guest attempts to set up the film’s atmosphere and make it creepy or at least entertaining, the movie stalls midway through and lacks quality pacing and style. Oh and the Yetis are merely hinted at and never shown, which is puzzling for a movie with “Abominable Snowman” in the title. Which is really disappointing, because Hammer Studios has always been known for wicked cool special effects and creatures that at their best look terrifying and unique. I understand that Guest was going for a psychological supernatural effect yet since the film never really goes anywhere it doesn’t work.

Still this movie isn’t a complete waste, as I liked Forrest Tucker and Cushing’s interactions with each other, presenting gruff harsh individualistic Americanism versus quiet, refined British ideals. Once we actually get to see one of the Snowman its a cool sight, which once again makes me wonder why the film waits so long to present the titular creatures. That would be the equivalent of making a Godzilla movie that only has Godzilla pop up near the end of the movie. Despite being a mixed bag I found this movie watchable at times, and I liked the ending I guess. I almost wonder if this film is a prime candidate for a remake, but there have been plenty of killer Yeti movies over the years so probably not.

Top 20 Horror Films of the 2000s Presents: Monsters (2010)

5.    Monsters (2010, Gareth Edward)

As much a love story as it is a monster movie, Monsters is a tender and moving film, one that is a classic journey story with a twist: a photojournalist and the woman he has been hired to bring back to the states are forced to trek through a Mexican wilderness populated by aliens. Creatures that descended from the sky a couple years prior, taking over the country and forcing the government to enact quarantine areas in an attempt to contain a menace they do not understand.

Andrew and Samantha are two different people, and and such do not get along. She doesn’t understand his job, he likes her but cannot seem to connect with her on any level. The fact that this film was made on a low budget is rather impressive, and that rests not only on the freaky looking aliens but also the two leads, who help carry the movie and give you enough reason to care about them. All great or good monster films rest on that concept, the idea that people are experiencing an unreal nightmare and are forced to deal with that nightmare: that a beast from who knows where has invaded their lives, impacting their ability to survive.

Plus I loved the shots of the Mexican countryside: the beauty of nature juxtaposed with the often constant danger of the aliens, the slowly growing connection between Sam and Andrew, the realization from both that maybe their lives could have greater meaning. Monsters is actually frightening at times, particularly during a night scene with a creature attack straight out of Jurassic Park, and that underlying thought of danger potentially happening is a running theme of the film. I’m glad that the young budding filmmaker Gareth Edwards is directing the new Godzilla film, because he has a clear eye for visuals and has already displayed that he can create a wonderful and yet sad experience in Monsters that left me wanting more.
