Let’s Get Criterion Presents: I Married a Witch (1942)

I had a crush on Veronica Lake before I saw this movie, all thanks to This Gun For Hire. She is much better in I Married a Witch, as she is front and center and runs the show. Fredric March is the descendant of the people who burned her and her father at the stake, nevermind that the Salem Witches were hanged instead. Magically reborn, she seeks revenge yet makes the classic romantic comedy mistake of falling in love.

This movie is based strongly on wit, classy jokes and a good amount of silly moments that are delightful. The movie does coast a lot on its good charm, yet that was enough for me. Lake and March have solid chemistry together and I was left satisfied and with the feeling that I Married a Witch will grow on me during a second viewing. Perhaps even during a third. They still make movies like this, sure, however it is not quite the same.

Let’s Get Criterion Presents: The Phantom Carriage (1920)

The hues of the ancient silent screen prints for The Phantom Carriage are mostly blue and yellow, and it works for this movie. I liked how it is a drama rooted in the fantastic, working as a bleak tragedy that shows a man in desperate need of a course correction. He neglects his family and laughs at the notion of goodness, until he ends up faced with a most dire situation. I am reminded a bit of A Christmas Carol with the ghosts coming to tell Scourge to change his ways, however this take is more horror movie related to a point.

I loved the practical special effects showing death’s ride, a ghastly thing powered by skeleton horses and driven by a person cursed to serve. There is also a scene that clearly inspired The Shining’s infamous axe moment, and the film is centered in a clear sense of morality. A poor woman cares only to save a man’s soul, even as she fades away. Another woman lingers for her husband to be a better person, knowing that he may never achieve it. Oh and the jailhouse scene is a harsh wake up call that unfortunately only takes on its intended target for so long.

This film took me a while to get through, since it is a silent film and I am used to sound. However The Phantom Carriage is marvelous, a well constructed movie that clearly has been the basis for other, equally great, works. Also I was surprised that the movie got away with a suicide scene, although I guess 1920s Europe was much different than America.

Let’s Get Criterion Presents: Repo Man (1984, Alex Cox)

“The life of a repo man is intense.”

Alex Cox’s 1984 cult classic is one of the earliest Criterion movies I ever owned. I still have my DVD copy, and I recall lovely gazing at the packaging and admiring how cool the movie looked on DVD. I mean I had only seen some low grade copy of the flick on cable TV before, and this was the 2010s, before Blu-ray and streaming overruled everything else. Maybe one day I’ll bother to upgrade my copy but for now it will do just fine. I have watched Repo Man at least four, maybe five times and it’s one of my all time favorite movies. I don’t think anything else quite like it exists today, at least no movies that come to mind.

Having Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton star was a fine choice, and they are the duo from hell. Otto and Bud are both hilarious and marveling together, living on the edge and serving up fantastic one liners. I mean you have ones such as “Repo man’s got all night! Every night!” and “Only an asshole gets killed over a car.” Alex Cox is not content to have the film only focus on these two, tossing in numerous other eccentric and off the wall characters that populate a bizarre underground. It’s all very punk rock you see, 100% 1980s, centered at the heart of Reagan America.

Part of me thinks this flick is a masterpiece, some other part is fine with me just labeling it great. The rest is amused at how Alex Cox managed to smuggle this glorious bit of satire mocking the stupidity and futility of American life out of a Hollywod that was quite conservative. Or at least neoliberal to say the least, masquerading as leftist while serving both capitalism and their studio masters. God I love this film so much. Hail oblivion and the path one takes to get there.

Horrorfest 2020 Presents: Son of Godzilla (1967, Jun Fukuda)

At this point the Godzilla franchise decides to aim for little kids and fully embrace pure camp. Thus we get Son of Godzilla, a fun movie about how Godzilla embraces a little kid and adapts him as his son. Godzilla is now a dad, and he tries to instruct his new off spring in the ways of being Godzilla. All while fighting off insect monsters.

Plus there are scientists on the island and a reporter who falls in love with the survivor of a past expedition. Or something, it is not important. Minilla is ridiculously adorable, and Godzilla is both a good and bad dad all at the same time. I liked the insect monsters, they were a nice touch and clearly were the inspiration for the monsters in the last couple American Godzilla flicks. My favorite part is the snow fight near the end, which is something the series could have done more often. Check it out.

Horrorfest 2018 Presents: Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989, Shinya Tsukamoto)

How does one describe Tetsuo: The Iron Man? Is Shinya Tsukamoto’s movie the disturbed love child of Eraserhead and David Cronenberg body horror? The beginning of industrial metal music, combined with music video style imagery and editing cuts? Or something even beyond all that, a nightmare fuel vision that draws the viewer in, never letting go, haunting all who view Tsukamoto’s masterpiece of flesh and metal. Bound together forever, entwined, destined to conquer a world that has let technology and industry that holds domain over mankind. After all, humanity has surrendered control to beings that will eventually overwhelm us if we are not careful. Plus the images presented are horrific yet also fascinating, literal but also metaphorical: I give this movie credit for managing to walk the fine line between desperation and meaning, a very uneasy task for any filmmaker tackling such material.

If you are looking for a movie with drawn out characters or an easy to follow plot, this movie is not for you. Instead if, like myself, you wish to seek out challenging films that present another worldview, then Tetsuo is a great choice. I also chuckled at how the end title says “Game Over,” as if the last insane act is a video game. Considering the 1980s, its a perfect title image, and predicted how many films in the years to come either adapted video games or choose to be structured like them. Also be prepared for a movie where a man has a giant drill coming out of him, not to mention turning into a monstrous pile of scrap metal, consuming all other metal around him. I wish I could write more about this film, however I wish to avoid spoilers and I think Tetsuo requires additional viewings. Which will have to be achieved through Shudder again, since according to Wikipedia all releases of the film are out of print. Maybe I should appeal to Criterion to add the film to their collection.

Horrorfest 2016 Presents: Genocide (1967, Kazui Nihonmats)

I tried not to compare Genocide to other 1960s monster movies, and yet I came away disappointed even though the film has some notable characteristics. There is some interesting thoughts on the nature of man and how destructive we can be, yet the film lacks the dramatic strengths necessary to overcome its weak monster. You have a monster movie without an actual cool looking beast, as in this film there are insects instead, although some appear as huge thanks to radiation. In one part of the film the insects act as a huge cloud that consumes a military plane carrying a nuclear weapon, a scene that is kind of suspenseful and then is followed by a love story I did not have any interest in.

Perhaps the other films in the Shochiku horror collection available on Criterion are better or at least not as slow as this one. Yes this film has an apocalyptic finality that works okay, however it comes far too late in the film. Also the poor acting, which I can excuse in a movie with better directing or truly strong themes hurts this film considerably. Not every Japanese monster movie had to be a Ishirō Honda style film, yet after seeing Genocide I think more praise should be directed his way for crafting something remarkable out of silly man in suits fighting each other films.

Horrorfest 2016 Presents: The Cars That Ate Paris (1974, Peter Weir)

This is a rather strange and yet intriguing movie. It is sci-fi, horror, and satire all rolled up into one cult low budget film package. Peter Weir before he hit it big in Hollywood created some interesting and unique movies that were centred in Australia or around Australians. The Cars That Ate Paris is one such film, and its title and subject is rather obvious. Well at least at face value.

Arthur is a young man who survives a car crash that kills his brother and leaves him stranded in the small town of Paris, Australia. He quickly discovers that no one leaves Paris, and also finds himself caught between the rebellious youth and the ruling elders of the town. This film despite weak acting and some questionable moments still is a bleak apocalyptic window into a society gone mad, ruined by their obsession with the auto.

The last act reminded me of Mad Max, which I’m sure was inspired by this movie. Weir has always been a director with something to say, and with Cars he delivers a good film that always kept me wathing. If one sits through the slower parts one is rewarded with a movie that has a crazy final act and even a funny scene out of a western. I would love to read the essay on this film written for its Criterion release.

Let’s Get Criterion

Recently I decided to go through my collection of Criterion films, a total number of which I can’t remember as I have lost track due to buying so many. It’s probably over a 150 at least. I haven’t viewed all of them yet either, and some of them have already been reviewed so a fresh perspective would be nice. I’ve also decided to do this after viewing several ones I purchased during Barnes & Noble’s 50% Criterion Sale. I hope they keep holding those sales again and again, and I am registered as a member of the Criterion website and follow them on Twitter. Here’s the list so far:

  1. Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970, horror/fantasy)
  2. Repo Man (1984, satire)
  3. I Married a Witch (1942, comedy/fantasy)
