Horrorfest 2021 Presents: Psycho Goreman (2020, Steven Kostanski)


Every once in a while there exists a fun cult movie that I fully embrace, and this time it’s Psycho Goreman. PG shows up on Earth and ends up controlled by a sociopathic girl named Mimi who along with her brother Luke end up bounding with an alien capable of destroying their whole planet. This movie is literally if a darker version of ET existed and mated with the Power Rangers.

One of the best parts is a garage rock band fueled montage scene that is darkly hilarious. Is this a horror movie? Maybe, or kind of in a way. This is mostly sci-fi and action, with lots of gore and very funny, twisted humor that may offend some and leave others like me laughing a lot. The special effects in this movie work really well and without them some of the elements wouldn’t have been as effective.

It also helps that both Nita-Josee Hanna and Owen Myre are great as the two kids who should probably be way more afraid of PG than they really are at any given moment. The family dynamic in this movie is also really strong, and I’m hoping that we get a sequel with more Psycho Goreman exploits. Even if we don’t there is still a movie worth viewing more than once. All hail PG!

Horrorfest 2019 Presents: One Cut of the Dead (2017, Shinichirou Ueda)


Every once in a while there comes along a movie that is equal parts clever and unique. Sometimes that is rarer in the horror genre, but when you encounter that type of movie you feel the need to celebrate it, particularly when the movie is both fun and delightful as well. The current gem I discovered while going through Shudder recommendations was the 2017 cult film One Cut of the Dead, a marvelous zombie movie that everyone should watch and enjoy. I thought it was funny, at times rather creepy, and a tribute to the efforts of low budget cinema.

Without giving away too much I will say that I also liked the entire cast, particularly Takayuki Hamatsu as the way over energetic director and Harumi Shuhama as the film’s main actress, who takes things a bit too far. The special effects reflect such B-movie classics as George A. Romero’s Dead films and the work of Lucio Fulci as well, and I was left pleasantly surprised by what happens later on in the movie. One Cut of the Dead is an example of a great foreign horror movie, and also reminds me that every time I think I have seen it all with horror films, something new comes along and inspires me to continue with the genre.

Horrorfest 2018 Presents: Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988, Michael A. Simpson)

While I liked the first film quite a bit, Sleepaway Camp II is better. There are a few notable changes, particularly having Angela, the villain of the series, go from silent to wise cracking. Naturally a new camp is set up, and Angela (now played by Pamela Springsteen, in a great performance), is hiding her identity and has gone back to killing anyone who crosses her. This film also has references to other slasher movies and a bleak sense of humor, elements that were needed since by the late 1980s slasher fatigue had set in.

Unlike the first movie, where most of the characters were awful people, this one has some okay folks. However when it comes to Angela, she doesn’t care: be annoying, do foolish things, or cross her path and things end badly. Two sisters find out the hard way, as do numerous other campers. The body count is higher, a characteristic of most horror sequels, and the kills are more gruesome.

Although it sometimes comes off as really campy, Sleepaway Camp II is mostly fun, even meta at times. If you like slasher films that are humorous and self aware, this one is for you. Viewed thanks to TubiTV, a good resource for movie fans. Oh and I think I hear the happy campers song echoing off in the distance…

 

Horrorfest 2016 Presents: Tucker & Dale Vs Evil (2010, Eli Craig)


What if all those times people faced hillbillies and thought said hillbillies to be evil they were misguided? Maybe it’s all one huge misunderstanding and if both sides talked to one another they would clean up matters before anyone gets hurt. Unfortunately that does not happen in the outrageously funny horror movie Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, a modern day cult classic which makes us root for a pair of guys who in any other movie would be the villians.

Tucker and Dale are simple country buddies who go out to fix up a cabin in the woods. Having never seen any horror movies and having already frightened a group of college students also on site, Tucker and Dale get sucked into a weekend from hell. They innocently save a drowning girl named Allison, only to face her friends who think she has been kidnapped. This leads to many hilarious and very gory moments, of which my favorite was the best woodchipper joke since Fargo. 

The last act manages to be even more ridiculously awesome, and a few notable flaws aside this movie rules. Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk have great chemistry together as the two leads and Katrina Bowden is very likable as Allison. Too bad this film suffered the fate of too many great cult movies that were ahead of their time. Especially since this one came out before The Cabin In The Woods, another funny and great spin on the horror genre. Remember folks: maybe next time that chainsaw wielding guy might be cleaning trees around his cabin. Maybe. Or he might be coming to kill you. I really don’t know these days.

Horrorfest 2016 Presents: They’re Watching (2016, Jay Lender, Micah Wright)


This movie sucked and it was made by two directors. It’s not funny save for a few parts, not scary at all and it’s populated by annoying characters. I don’t mind unlikable people as long as they are interesting. The saving grace is Vladimir, who is a thinly sketched Eastern European stereotype and is still funny anyways. He has the few quality lines in the film. This is that rare found footage movie that I don’t like, and I was disappointed because it seemed decent. The last couple of witch movies I watched I also did not care for, so maybe this particular sub genre is not my thing. Imagine Hostel without the extreme moments or the quality social and political commentary. That is They’re Watching. Don’t bother to tune in.

Horrorfest 2015 Presents: Housebound (2014, Gerard Johnstone)


Like many other twisty and novel horror movies Housebound isn’t easy to review. One has to avoid spoilers and yet still discuss the film in solid if not extensive detail. What I did note is how wonderfully funny this movie is, and how it only has a few actual scares. Which is fine considering the events that occur and how the movie at times mocks horror cliches and is savvy and well scripted. I do wish this movie had been frightening yet its high level of quality over compensates. Also the cast does a great job, too.

The film’s dynamic centers on the troubled relationship between Kylie and her mother, Miriam. Since Kylie is a regular offender she has been sentenced to house arrest, trapped in her mother’s house. Which may or may not be haunted. And which is next door to a potential murderer, too. If that’s not horror movie territory I don’t know what is, and Housebound mines it very well.

Also what I like is security contractor, Amos, who is both funny and a great foil for Kylie as she investigates what is really going on. There is a scene that is timely and utterly hilarious, not to mention a number of thrilling moments. Housebound despite its flaws is an excellent addition to the horror genre. New Zealand has contributed plenty to the genre and will hopefully continue to do so in the future.

Horrorfest 2015 Presents: Vampire In Brooklyn (1995, Wes Craven)


Lost in the discussion about Wes Craven’s career is that he engaged in comedic moments in many of his horror films. One such movie was Vampire In Brooklyn, a rather entertaining and fun horror comedy that has some good funny moments and even a few scares. Eddie Murphy in a rare horror movie role stars as a vampire seeking a cop played by Angela Bassett, who happens to be half human and half vampire. Without her the line of vampires from the Caribbean will finally die off. This movie has some decent homages to previous vampire films, and is also Wes Craven’s own take on the sub genre.

Much like some of his other films Craven presents social and political commentary. Murphy turns into a preacher and manages to convince an entire congregation that they should turn to evil. Unfortunately considering the hate many so called Christians push today such a moment is relevant and also darkly humorous to a degree. Also you have the police failing to comprehend and understand what they are dealing with, another theme that is prevalent in not only Craven’s work but also in many horror movies. I rather like how Craven is able to balance humor and horror, two genres that are tricky to get right.

Also it’s cool that he cast Zakes Mokae as a vampire hunter, since he was a horror veteran and he was great in The Serpent and the Rainbow, another Craven film. John Witherspoon and Kadeem Hardison provide additional comedic relief, yet it is Bassett who gives a strong performance and has superb chemistry with Murphy. It’s too bad that Eddie Murphy only made one horror film as he has a menacing presence. Despite its flaws this is an good, solid movie and is an example of how vampire movies contain views on society, religion and repressed feelings.

Horrorfest 2015 Presents: What We Do In The Shadows (2015, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement)


Just when you think the found footage/fake documentary style horror film has run its course there comes along another film that proves the doubters wrong. What We Do In The Shadows is one such film, and it is a hilarious entry in the sub genre that has recently been overwhelmed by Parnamormal Activity and it’s endless sequels. Lately Twilight has caused a good response in terms of some great vampire moves, so that’s good, I guess.

Living in an old house, hidden from society are a bunch of old vampires. What I love about this movie is that the jokes are well executed and range from slapstick to witty, often all in the same moment. The cast is top notch and each member adds to the funny proceedings. One of my favorite jokes is the bat fight scene, which is as amusing as it sounds. Although the last act wears a bit thin you have to laugh at Vlad going on and on about “The Beast.” Not to mention smile at the idea of werewolves and vampires talking smack to one another. Based on this and Housebound New Zealand horror has a very bright future indeed.
