Horrorfest 2019 Presents: Summer of 84 (2018, François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell)

Channeling a mix of Stranger Things and Stand By Me, the Canadian horror flick Summer of 84 also reminds me of Monster Squad. I liked how it’s a solid mystery thriller featuring a group of likable kids. One of them is played by Judah Lewis, who seems to be in a good number of horror movies these days. The leader of the group, Davey, is played by Graham Verchere, who offers up film noir style voiceover narration.

A serial killer of kids is loose, and Davey in true Rear Window fashion suspects his neighbor. Problem is that neighbor is a cop, and a well respected one at that. Gathering up his friends, Davey decides to investigate despite the possible consequences. I rather liked the use of walkie talkies to spy on someone, plus the film’s excellent, very 1980s score.

Even though Summer of 84 moves a bit too slow at times, it’s still a really good and enjoyable movie. The last act works incredibly well and there are scenes that are very suspenseful. “Even serial killers live next door to someone.” A rather chilling line, and all too sadly true.

Horrorfest 2018 Presents: Halloween (2018, David Gordon Green)

Michael Myers is back for another round with Laurie Strode, only this time the people in charge have decided this entry would only follow the original 1978 film. Laurie still has a family, but its one daughter (Judy Greer, who has a family of her own) and suffers from exteme PTSD. Who could blame her, considering on one night 40 years ago some psycho murdered her friends and tried to kill her. Jamie Lee Curtis does a fine job of conveying these feelings, although at times it gets lost in the made for TV spots gun firing scenes with her shooting at dummies in the backyard.

Honestly as much as I liked this film, the sequels did not set a very high standard and thus were able to be cleared rather easily. At least in this one Myers was made into a human being again, and so he was creepy in some ways, like in the original first two movies. I rather liked Andi Matichak as Laurie’s granddaughter-I think another flick could be based mostly around her, especially with how the movie ended.

Perhaps I had way too high expectations for this flick, yet I still really liked it anyways. A second viewing at home away from a nicely crowded theater would be a good idea. I did enjoy the crowd atmosphere, particularly the reaction to a character literally slitting his own throat. Since this was a hit, expect more Michael Myers in the near future: the Shape never dies as long as he makes money.

Horrorfest 2018 Presents: The Meg (2018, Jon Turteltaub)

Sometimes you just want to enjoy a big dumb action comedy horror film that has Jason Statham battling a giant prehistoric shark. He even has help from a wide cast of people ranging from Li Bingbing to Robert Taylor. Rainn Wilson is along for the ride as the comic relief, and The Meg actually has a fairly diverse cast. Also the creature effects are pretty good despite being mostly CGI, and I did love the underwater scenes. Besides how can you hate a movie that has Statham singing “Just keep swimming” while dealing with a huge shark? It never hurts to turn your brain off sometimes, although this film is more clever than some critics think.

Besides there are a few good jump scare moments, and the film is smart enough to have a good pace and run time. While this should have been an R rated gore fest, The Meg has enough to keep most entertained. Also the little girl who plays Bingbing’s daughter is beyond adorable, and is the highlight of the film. The ocean is full of terrors, so they say, and even wonders. As long as mankind never awakens something hidding in the deep.

Horrorfest 2018 Makes Me Shudder: 10 Years of Viewing

Look, I know the last one was a bust. I blame work, laziness, whatever. However this time I have a new, better resource: Shudder. Also not going with a list again, just showing the ones I have seen so far. Plus this is the 10th year of me doing Horrorfest. Wow. So I plan on going all out this time.
