Top 20 Horror Films of the 2000s Presents: Ginger Snaps (2000)

6.    Ginger Snaps (2000, John Fawcet)

Blood. So much blood. Perhaps its to be expected of a movie that is really about young girls going through puberty, experiencing their period for the first time-and so the red stuff flows. Yet in the end its all about a nasty problem that one sister tries to help the other sister with: being a werewolf. Its bad enough becoming a woman when you also have to be concerned with trying to eat the ones you love once the full moon arises. Ginger Snaps is freaky, weird, gross, and tragic, a sexual opera played out among its main characters, utilizing body horror perfectly-because after all werewolf films concern themselves with body transformation and mutilation, skin covered in hair, the body once human now beast. Having been aware of this film’s well known reputation I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, however after everything starts to go south and the body count starts to rise I knew I was viewing something unique and frightening.

As to why most of the truly good or great werewolf movies exist after 1981 is interesting. Maybe the special effects just were not up to par for decades, although I love the original The Wolfman and think its a classic. The Howling has excellent werewolf makeup and FX, and the only knock against Ginger Snaps is that the werewolves look sort of fake here. That doesn’t take away from the crazy relationship between a pair of sisters, one who ends up changing and the other who feels even more alienated than usual as a result. More feminist driven horror movies need to exist, and one can thank Ginger Snaps and others for helping lead the way or at least breaking the mold.

Top 20 Horror Films of the 2000s Presents: Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2007)

12. Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2007, Scott Glosserman)

Imagine that Freddy, Michael, and Jason-even Leatherface-are real and not fictional characters. In this world a person like Leslie Vernon would be inspired to follow in their legacy and not be inspired by people who really exist in real life-Jack the Ripper, The Zodiac Killer, Charles Manson, The Night Stalker, etc. Leslie is a charming young man, highly charismatic and willing to let a video crew led by a young wannabe journalist videotape his ultimate goal: to become a famous serial killer, a masked menace terrorizing people and becoming a legend in the process. Whether or not he succeeds isn’t the point here, its how naive the video crew is-they actually don’t think that Leslie is serious until things spiral out of control and the danger becomes very real. Considering that Leslie gave them numerous clues you would imagine the video crew picking up on what was really going on, however in this day and age its hard to tell if people are being serious or not.

What’s even more awesome about this film is that its a mostly smart, well made slasher movie that even features slasher genre deconstruction: Leslie even mentions his “Ahab,” a man who tries to stop him, played by horror legend Robert Englund in a nice meta inspired joke performance. Scott Wilson, who actually played a killer in the classic In Cold Blood is here as Leslie’s mentor, an older man who claims to have survived numerous deaths. Even though the “Found Footage” style camerawork oddly goes to a halt once Leslie dons his makeup, mask, and grabs his weapons of carnage, this is a pretty good use of the gimmick. Stick around for the credits by the way, and give this movie a chance-its got a dark sense of humor also that it used all too well. “I choose to be the opposite of all that is good and pure and holy in this world. You choose journalism.”-Leslie Vernon

Top 20 Horror Films of the 2000s Presents: The Call of Cthulhu (2005)

19. The Call of Cthulhu (2005, Andrew Leman)

Not enough horror movies these days make use of black and white, which is a shame since color doesn’t allow for enough creepy shadows and areas where you are not sure if evil being is hiding in the darkness, ready to emerge and swallow your soul while chewing on your remaining body parts. The Call of Cthulhu (2005), based on the classic Lovecraft tale (which I have sadly not read) is unfortunately way too limited, although its still a really cool horror movie that was a nice throwback to the old days of horror cinema. Back when atmosphere was more important than random jump scares and gore, although I do like jump scares done right and I do love gore. Yet its fun to revisit classic Gothic horror, reveling in how budget limitations and censorship forced upon the filmmaker by the studio could result in some truly effective horror films, ones that would dig under you skin and echo in your thoughts hours later. I’m sure that movies such as The Call of Cthulhu scared the daylights out of people back then.

Anyways The Call of Cthulhu (2005) utilizes black and white cinematography and old school monster animation to give the viewer an eerie look into an adaption of a tale most chilling. I’ve always found the idea of Lovecraft’s creatures really existing, waiting somewhere to re-emerge into our world, creating and wrecking havoc upon mankind. Thankfully that is not the case, as the so called Elder Ones are the figments of a deceased man’s imagination. From what I understand Lovecraft worked best in describing horrors unseen and unknown, and this is why the best takes on his work capture that spirit rather well. Cthulhu in that regard does its job well, and should be checked out by those who enjoy such tales. I would love to see the film’s creators bring to life more of Lovecraft’s stories, all decked out in glorious black and white.

Top 20 Horror Films Of The 2000s Presents: Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)

20. Bubba Ho-Tep (2002, Don Coscarelli)

Not all horror movies are scary, and this one has maybe a few creepy moments. However it is utterly hilarious, a wonderful horror/fantasy comedy featuring Bruce Campbell as an aging Elvis living out his remanding days in a nursing home. Ossie Davis plays JFK-well a man who says he is JFK, anyways-in a delightfully cranky and charming performance. Campbell is a natural as Elvis, and when an Egyptian mummy is unleashed upon the home and starts killing people, Elvis decides to “TCB-Take Care of Business.” One of my favorite moments however is a flashback sequence in which Elvis relays how and why he ended up rotting away in an old folks home, and its a tale that’s equal parts tragic and really humorous.

The mummy itself is merely a device to move the plot along, yet anyone who isn’t delighted by the prospect of Elvis teaming up with JFK to battle evil must not have liked this movie very much. I was entertained throughout, and its too bad there never was a sequel-for reasons that people who have seen the movie know all too well. Maybe its for the best however, even though the idea of a trilogy where Elvis continues to battle evil forces would have ruled. Furthermore, perhaps such a trilogy wouldn’t have featured enough musings on growing old, fame once held and now forever lost, and the thoughts of a man who time has passed by. We all have to go someday, and that concept really does suck.

A final word: Reading the quotes from this movie on IMDB.com remind me just how funny this movie is. Let me share a few:

Elvis: Look, man, President Johnson’s dead.
JFK: Shit. That ain’t gonna stop him.

Elvis: That’s it? I mean, we’re investigating a scuttling in the hall, trying to figure out who attacked you last night, and you bring me here to look at stick pictures on the shit house wall, man?

[in the washroom stall, looking at hieroglyphics on the wall]
JFK: Now this top line translates into, “Pharoah gobbles donkey goobers,” and the bottom line, “Cleopatra does the nasty.”
Elvis: Say what?
JFK: Well pretty much, that’s the best I can translate it.

Elvis: Shit, Bubba Ho-tep comes out of that creek bed, he’s going to come out hungry and pissed. When I try to stop him he’s going to shove this paint can up my ass and he’s going to shove me and that wheelchair up Jack’s ass.
